Dr. Steven Sandberg-Lewis
Steven Sandberg-Lewis, ND, DHANP is a practitioner of Naturopathic gastroenterology who has been in practice for over 40 years. In1996 he joined the full-time faculty of the National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM) in Portland, Oregon. Now adjunct faculty, he continues to engage in patient care. A key professor in the Gastroenterology Block Course, Dr. Sandberg-Lewis, known to patients and students as Dr. SS-L, teaches several electives including Gastroenterology Laboratory, Advanced Gastroenterology and The Liver in Health and Disease.
Dr. SS-L supervises the NUNM Gastroenterology Mentor Shift, giving student doctors the opportunity to have expert supervision while working with patients suffering from complex digestive disorders.
Areas of special clinical and research focus include irritable bowel syndrome, SIBO, GERD, hiatal hernia, inflammatory bowel disease (including microscopic colitis), biliary dyskinesia, the sterolbiome, gastroparesis and chronic nausea/vomiting.
Dr. SS-L is a well-received presenter at educational seminars around the U.S. and beyond. He has authored or co-authored multiple articles and webinars and is frequently interviewed on digestive health topics.
In 2017 he wrote the second edition of his textbook Functional Gastroenterology . In 2023 he published Let's Be Real About Reflux: Getting to the Heart of Heartburn, intended for the general public as well as practitioners. It is his hope the many misconceptions regarding reflux can be rectified.
